A bodily disease, which we look upon as whole and entire within itself, may, after all, be but a symptom of some ailment in the spiritual part. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Scarlet Letter

Question of the month; Does Kombucha really improve health? Answer is...Absolutely yes! If it did not better health why would millions of people have kept drinking it and preparing it, for thousands of years.

Description of Kombucha

Kombucha is a delicious tea-based drink that is often drunk for its health benefits or medicinal reasons. There is scientific information supporting health benefits but unfortunately few studies or have been conducted mainly due to the cost of such studies. There are many centuries of anecdotal stories supporting health benefits attributed to the tea. Kombucha is available commercially but can easily be made at home by fermenting tea using a spongy mass of yeast and bacteria often nicknamed a SCOBY. This forms the kombucha culture which is also most often referred to as the "mushroom" but it is not really a mushroom. It slowly grows on the surface of the fermenting tea during the period of time the tea is fermenting and resembles a whitish colored pancake.

Testimonial (Just one of numerous):

Testimonial - Prostate Cancer: "In January my partner was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer with a PSA of nearly 800. The cancer had spread to the hip and thigh, the pain was insupportable. After ten days of taking increasing doses of Kombucha (starting at 50ml and going up in 50ml increments culminating in a litre a day in four 250ml doses), all the pain had gone and he was able to walk normally without even a walking stick. The flesh of the right leg had become almost necrotised, and not only was it restored but varicose veins which had been present for decades disappeared completely. A catheter had been inserted and we were expecting the (usually) necessary operation in June , but the trial without catheter was passed after the third attempt. In 6 months the PSA was down to 127, after 18 months it had dropped to 0.8 (normal is between 0 and 4.0). The prescribed medicine is 3-monthly injections of Zoladex, which treatment began some weeks after the Kombucha had worked its miracle and got rid of the awful pain, at the very least?... Should I be worried about the safety of Kombucha?

Most ask this question because they have heard that some fungi are toxic or they have been told misinformation about Kombucha. Kombucha is not a mushroom it is not toxic. It is only "popularly" called a mushroom.

Kombucha Tea has been used for health improvement for thousands of years it is now being sold in food and health in the U.S., it is a lot cheaper to make it yourself.

The tea does improve health but it is not a drug. The FDA has stated that Kombucha Tea to be a safe beverage provided it is prepared properly in a clean manner so as not to be contaminated by common food pathogens. All foods that you prepare can become contaminated but the risk is probably less so for Kombucha as it is a fermented beverage which as it ferments it makes a small amount of alcohol helping to protect it.

No person has died from drinking properly prepared Kombucha Tea and yet millions of people daily drink this remarkable beverage and have done so for over two millennium. One thousand people a year die from taking aspirin, so which do you think is safer!

Kombucha Tea is a fermented drink and , but some few people might be sensitive to any number of different things. An allergic is usually just a minor skin blush or itch.

The tea is acidic but no more so than grapefruit juice or orange juice, unless it is permitted to ferment too long then it becomes more acidic. Drinking Kombucha Tea cannot change the pH level of your blood unless you drink very large quantities of the tea when it is sour, this would be foolish to do, drinking large quantities of anything is usually not a good idea.

Rarely A Kombucha mushroom might develop a mold but this is not common. Most common such molds are not harmful but a contamination can ruin the taste of the tea. This small problem is easily avoided by keeping the fermenting tea properly covered and if it should occur is easily detected and you simple make a new batch of tea."]
